LIGHT IN THE JUNGLE

Edited and with an introduction by Will Oursler, this book is the story of 37 years spent on the Amazon by the authors, Seventh Day Adventist missionaries who were born and educated in Nebraska. Almost by accident the two sent from Baia to the Amazon, became medical missionaries, for although Mrs. Halliwell was a nurse, her husband had no medical training. But meeting malaria, hookworm and other tropical diseases and realizing that to save souls they must first save bodies, they built a small boat, equipped it with medical supplies, and set forth into the Amazon jungle. Today a fleet of similar boats, under their command until their recent retirement, covers the same country, endowed in part by the church, in part by the Brazilian Government. Simply told, radiating faith in the goodness of God and His miracles but never unduly pious, this charming tale of service and devotion should appeal to church members of all sects; non-religious readers will enjoy it for its humor and simplicity and its tales of unpretentious heroism.
