THE NINE LIVES OF EUROPE

An aware, outspoken and primarily cheerless portrait of western Europe today which surveys, from country to country, not only the political position, physical condition of each, but also their cultural and spiritual climate. For where there is in most cases economic recovery, there is a concomitant ""spiritual prostration"". Europe is working again, hard and well, but all her peoples show a frightening confusion. From France, where intellectual treason and moral bankruptcy prevail, to Italy where anticlericalism sweeps the country, Lania goes on through Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and Yugoslavia, and their varying degrees of Soviet influence and protest; Germany, whose people are neither Nazi or anti-Nazi, just nihilists, and where democratization has been a france; Austria, a healthier, brighter picture; Britain, and socialism; and finally to America. Lania believes that the impasse today can only be solved if America acquires a bold, frank peace strategy, makes a settlement with Russia to secure peace- since Russia is not prepared for war. The personal and human touches give this a general appeal.
