What a task, this collecting from sources over twenty-five centuries, the stories which build a rounded picture of Jewish history and literature. The Bible, the Apocrypha, contemporary journals, chronicles of Josephus, the Torah, both law and legent, history, folk tales, fiction -- all take their place. Under the Crescent and Under the Crosss; Ghetto Lights and Shadows; New Frontiers -- these are a few of the main headings, under which the stories are grouped. Among the moderns appear such names as Lion Feuchtwanger, Louis Golding, Waldo Frank, Arnold and Stefan Zweig, Luigi Pirandello, Ludwig Lewisohn, Albert Halper, John Cournos, Mary Antin and many others. Should be a ""must book"" to every Jew who has any interest in his own backgrounds in literature -- and of considerable interest to students in general. Essential for public libraries.
