AMERICANS FROM NORWAY

A volume commemorating the past, and present, of Norwegians in America, this follows the early voyages of Erikson and Karlsefni as the first white discoverers, goes on to those who came over with the Dutch in the 17th century and to the later background of the great emigration of 1925, and covers the course of those who came over on Norway's Mayflowers, the Restaurationen. From there, the population shift, from the Eastern seaboard, to northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and ever westward, the importance of church, school and the press are examined; the next section is taken up with the Norwegian centers in Chicago, Minneapolis, Brooklyn and then the roster of outstanding Norwegian-Americans, in the professions and the arts and sciences, and in sea-faring, is called. A record of culture patterns and slow assimilation of what is now two and a half million of our population, this is sober, solid racial-group history, and an interesting panel of national background.
