From boys' sports stories for this age group, Leon Burgoyne turns to a rather creditable historical novel of the Indian problem as it was shown up by the wars of Tecumseh and the British near Chikagou. Reporting for duty at Fort Dearborn, Ronan is fresh from military training and has a deep prejudice against all Indians. A commandant explains the necessity for friendship where friendship is given- but Ronan has already made a deadly enemy of Pesotum, a treacherous Potawatomie. His vision widens when he meets Mary Caldwell, a quarter Indian, and falls in love with her. Not too late, he gains the trust of Mary and her people who Join with him in a common purpose as they put a stop to Pesotum's plans. A period story- with a message of universal Justice.
