Chandler's life, says his biographer, reflects the state, its sturdy character, independence, over-assurance, occasional narrowness. An historical record rather than a personal one, burdened with a minutiae of campaigning, fund raising, vote getting, of acts, bills and debates in the Senate. He put Hayes in office and helped defeat Grant. He was Secretary of the Navy under Arthur. Then back in the Senate until his defeat in 1901. Perhaps of local interest but outside of that, a book for exhaustive reference shelves on American political figures. A ""major minor document"".
