THE CIVIL RIGHTS READER

For the high school library (others may share with adult but should be aware), a compilation of the ""Basic Documents of the Civil Rights Movement"" from 1947, with the Report of the President's Committee on Civil Rights, to the Civil Rights Act of 1966. None are unfamiliar and some are widely available, but they are handy together and arranged here for cumulative impact in eight subject categories, including leadership, education, voting, violence and law enforcement, government response and the future. In his prefatory remarks Mr. Friedman is cautiously hopeful (and scrupulously non-partisan); in the Foreword Martin Duberman is more outspoken, feels that this ""Second Reconstruction"" is ""played out."" Either way, the material is important and this is a useful assemblage.
