A novel of the French and Indian Wars, this is the story of David Ferris, 17-year old son of an English schoolmaster, who had left England and found a home on the Connecticut River in New Hampshire. David is captured by Indians, escapes with the help of a Ranger, one John Ash, finds his father's farm burned by Indians and two freshly dug graves, which he assumes are his parents'. He joins the Rangers under Major Robert Rogers. The subsequent adventures are based on factual expeditions of the Rangers, with many exciting hardships and fights, long treks in freezing weather without food, tales of bravery and courage -- and ultimately the finding of his sister and his parents, in Montreal. The pace of the narrative is slowed up by the use of the stilted language of the period.
