KIRKUS REVIEW

Bernstein's television series of eight concerts for young people are reproduced here in text interpolations for five 7-inch long-playing records included with the book. A maestro of exemplary clarity, Bernstein discusses basic and some more technical musical aspects: meaning, humor, impressionism in music, classic, American and folk music; orchestration and symphonic development of composition. The information is valid for all ages and the form is especially palatable for his intended audience (12-18 years.) A valuable lesson in musical understanding and appreciation, the book should be a popular and worthwhile gift.
