KIRKUS REVIEW

Bernsteinls television series of eight concerts for young people are reproduced here in text interpolations for five seven-inch long-playing records included with the book. A maestro of exemplary clarity, Bernstein discusses basic and some more technical musical aspects meaning, humor, impressionism in music; classical, American, and folk musics and symphonic development of composition. A wide variety of selections illustrates the textual comments. Some adults may object to the flippant, tone Bernstein adopts, but the information is valid for all ages and the firm is especially palatable for his intended audience (12 to 18 years). A valuable lesson in musical understanding and appreciation, the book should be a popular--and worthwhile gift item.
