THE LOST PHARAOHS

Life Under the Pharaohs (reviewed on p. 715) was written as a companion piece to The Lost Pharaohs (published originally and imported in a small edition by Philosophical Library in 1951). Since this had limited circulation in its original form and has now being out of print for five years, revived interest seemed to warrant republishing. To many it will seem a wholly new book, for the introduction and the final chapter place it in the frame of reference of the current concern over the unexcavated areas of the Delta, threatened by the Ashwan Dam. That the problems between the archaeologists and the present government of Egypt have been settled and agreement reached as to division of the findings, makes probable immediate advance in new excavations. To that end, the interested layman will find particular concern in providing a background of fact regarding Egypt's ancient history, the history of the archaeological findings, and the story of the men whose names are immortalized in this connection, Petrie, de Morgan, Belzoni, Vyse, Perring, Reisner, Cartor, Lord Carnavon, Alan Gardiner, etc. All this is here and more, as successive periods come briefly and vividly to life, and places such as Luxor, Karnak, the Royal Valley, the site of the palaces at Akhetaten, the pyramids, and so on, are recreated.
