THE HEART IS THE TEACHER

Leonard Covello, an Italian immigrant, was well equipped to work and teach within the Italian community of East Harlem. His achievements -- night school for adults, store-front recreation centers, the use of native languages to speed the process of assimilation, the founding of the first city high-school Italian department, his career as principal of Benjamin Franklin High School-- as accounted in this reflection of forty-five years of dedication, should be helpful and inspiring to those facing contemporary problems of education and recreation in ""trouble areas"".
