LEONARD EVERETT FISHER'S LIBERTY BOOK

The cry of ""Liberty!"" that resounded through 18th century America becomes the occasion for an album of high-intensity poster graphics in red, white and blue. In between double-page flag motifs and monumental one-color tableaux, we're given the words and music to several patriotic songs (""Hail, Columbia"" and the ""Liberty Song""); Tom Paine's invocation of ""The Liberty Tree""; quotations from Patrick Henry and the Declaration of Independence; and some reproductions of revolutionary broadsides. (Some of these last, especially one signed by ""The COMMITTEE for TARRING and FEATHERING,"" speak for a rather more political interpretation of Liberty than Emma Lazarus' ""New Colossus"" which winds this up.) A handsome souvenir commemoration, especially for admirers of this illustrator's strongly individual style, but the material as presented makes no statement beyond the visual one.
