The new edition of the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JAZZ

It is highly unlikely that the real story of the crystallization of jazz will ever be pieced together."" But Leonard Feather, considered one of the world's leading authorities on the subject, has brought together a huge assortment of factual data in the hope of coming as close as possible to documenting the idiom for posterity. It is not necessary to agree with Feather in every particular to see some merit in his effort to represent jazz as a lusty and unusual, but quite respectable, form of music. The present volume greatly expands and brings up to date the bibliographies, biographies, trade information (such as booking agency lists) and oddments of knowledge that were responsible for the wide acclaim of the first edition of this encyclopedia five years ago.
