Leonard Gribble, an assiduous, rather than animated, annal-ist has searched the files, of the Yard, the Surets, the Mounted Police, the Kriminal Archiv for this first volume of cases which is an able demonstration of the patience of the man on the beat on the trail of the man on the run. Allen Pinkerton, in Tennessee, used perfume to overcome a cashier's murderer; a drain proves to be a grim grave for a man's wife and family; a newlywed dies to her husband's accompaniment- Nearer My God To Thee; Frank Norfleet's sense of justice cost him $70,000 and 3 years in his search for a confidence man; there's the Brooklyn kidnapping of Arthur Freed, a human fly, the man called Furnace who used fire to destroy the evidence of his crime, and that criminal philanderer- Landru.... In ADVENTURES IN MURDER (this will be published a little later-August 29th), these cases deal with some ""notorious killers in love"" and among them you will meet William Corder who gave immortality to Maria by taking her life; William Sheward who was to love his wife more dead than alive; Arthur Devereux, the parental schizophrenic, who adored his firstborn but hated the twins which followed; and the better known Harvey Crippen who administered permanent sedation to his wife of many years, Edith Thompson and Frederic Bywaters, Jean-Pierre Vaquier, and Judd Gray and Ruth Snyder.....A painstaking undertaking.
