DANNY ON THE LOOKOUT

Like Sam's First Fish (1962, p. 519, J-139) this is an instructive story about the outdoors which young readers can readily follow on their own. Danny spends a week visiting his uncle, the head ranger of Big Bear Park. Contrary to his uncle's warnings, Danny feeds blackberries to two bear cubs and is almost attacked by the mother bear. He redeems himself, however, for when he is taken to the lookout station he is the first to sight the smoke of a forest fire. The information about the operation of a national park will be of interest to beginning readers, who should have no difficulty with the simple vocabulary and large print. They may be somewhat deterred by the clumsy illustrations, which, in lurid shades of mustard and chartreuse, show the characters in awkward poses.
