Leonard Kriegel was 11 when he was stricken at camp with polio which killed his bunkmate. His father ordered him to be brave --and he was. He was also full of anger at his enforced dependence and soon the anguish of adolescence was upon him. His hospital life and his battle against the constricting pattern of helplessness led him to rebel at his role all through college.
