THE JOCKS by Leonard Shecter

THE JOCKS

By

Pub Date: Dec. 1st, 1969

Mr. Shecter, for years a sports columnist for the New York Post, exhibits ""cynicism of the highest order"" in this wicked, funny, and often startling expose of the games played off the field and the scores that never get posted. And he's some paper tiger, lashing into the greed, and corruption in a world where sportswriters are on payoff lists and almost everyone is on to some part of the point spread. Along with All Star villains (newspapers, TV executives, managers) he unveils some of the Un-All American traits of heroes such as Roger Maris, known around the club house as ""a pisser and a moaner."" There's a dissection of the power tactics of the International Olympic Committee, the AAU and the NCAA. But the real scandal lies in the big fix and there are hints of erring-do by everyone from Ty Cobb to Rocky Graziano. Not to mention coaches and officials. It's a blind eye-opener and could well be the sleeper of the season.
