DNA and parapsychology--in a busy nonsense stew that never quite convinces or delivers horrific chills. Bill Conover is a famous writer now researching a book on gambling at Lake Tahoe--where he finds himself mesmerized by a young beauty who wins and wins, seeming to read the blackjack dealer's mind. She's Julie Brubaker, and she not only reads minds but also can see the faces of downturned cards. They fall in love and together start researching other people with terrific ESP--a golfer, a magician, a baseball pitcher, a football player, a ""psychotic"" girl--but then these paranormal folks all start disappearing, and Julie herself is kidnapped while visiting her parents in Chicago. What's going on? Well, Conover is on the trail of a Dr. Benjamin--who delivered this entire host of psi specimens on very nearly the same day at the same Chicago hospital. And Conover at last uncovers Benjamin's secret files and finds out all about the first experiments in genetic engineering--which led to Dr. Benjamin's becoming a would-be Dr. Frankenstein. . . who now wants to kill all his creations in one fell swoop. Fairly lively but wildly unpersuasive--and no significant addition to the teeming crop of DNA-related fictions.
