THE WOUND OF PETER WAYNE

Another tightly written historical adventure by Leonard Wibberley deserts his familiar high seas setting and comes ashore as Peter Wayne, a liberal Southerner, tells what happened to him after the cease fire at Appomattox. Deeply wounded in spirit and convinced that Northern tyranny has moved to block the South's wish to right its own wrongs, 17 year old Peter returns to find his small Georgia plantation in ruins and his parents dead. Peter thinks, justifiably he feels under the circumstances, that Lincoln is to blame for all the misfortune. But a run-in with a crooked tax collector and some good advice from an old family friend are enough to convince him that he is wrong and that he needs to discover himself as an American before he can begin to reconstruct his South. For a time then, Peter goes West with Jim, one of his farm's Negroes, and their experiences with Indian warfare and the feeling of a frontier country prepare Peter for his return to a Georgia he can build anew, despite the odds.
