HIS MAJESTY'S HIGHLANDERS

Bruce Fletcher was precipitated headlong into acceptance of manhood- and at one and the same time, rejected Oxford and the cloth as a preordained career, and aimed for a role in the King's service, when trouble with the French across the Atlantic was in the brewing. But many things intervened:- he did the unforgivable-and struck a superior officer; he was flogged and imprisoned and escaped; he eventually made his way to Scotland and signed up with the Majesty's Highlanders for colonial service; -- and his lady love, faithless to their vows, married an officer, that same one he had struck. The most important contribution the story makes, lies not in Bruce Fletcher's somehow predictable adventures, but in the vivid picture of the French and Indian War in the region around Lake George and Lake Champlain -- as seen from the British side.
