An above average mystery-adventure story, sparkling, informal style, and career information about game wardens and trappers make this superior fare for boys who love the out-of-doors. Young Jeff White, true son of his famous woodsman father, lives with Will Hibbs, warden of the State Island Fish and Game Department, since his father's death. Determined to try a trapping venture of his own, Jeff prepares to work a trap line in the Black Lake region in Maine. While working and weathering the treacherous winter in the wilds with the help of good natured Warden Buck Larrabee, State Trooper Jack Bailey and Jeff's pal Skipper, Jeff trips up against a mystery involving the body of what had been supposedly an escaped convict, sinister Gaston LeFleur, the trapper, a gentle, whiskered recluse, Willie Whiskers, and a mysterious rumor of a ""white wolf"". Narrow escapes, sleuthing and races through the snow bring about the unraveling. Friendly banter adds chuckles.
