The confession of a near-sororicide tells of Marie de Rochehault, a sinister, misshapen woman with the face of an angel who hates her lovely twin sister from infancy on. Her sister's beauty highlights her own deformity, and she takes refuge in her father's medical books. She becomes a doctor as well as a fashionable hostess; she experiments with love, but only once is her heart engaged- by a Russian prince whom she loses to her sister. And when her sister becomes ill, she plans to kill her. But the peasantry who live in the village surrounding the Chateau beg that the invalid be taken to Lourdes. There is a miraculous cure, but no one but Marie knows that it is she who has been cured. After two days in the prayerful atmosphere, she decides to administer drugs to her sister which will save her life, and as self-punishment for the crime she had contemplated, she exiles herself to a leper colony in Africa. Please take it away.
