ALICE IN WONDERLAND

The key to this new Alice lies in the fact that it is ""abridged and prepared under the supervision of Josette Frank, Child Study Association"". Instinctively, many of us approach an ""abridged"" Alice with raised eyebrows. But this note on the title page was a Stop, Look & Listen. And the considered opinion, after close and critical reading of the text, is that here is an extraordinarily successful abridgement, holding closely to the beloved text, eliminating some of the episodes that drag with today's first to third graders, and never attempting a rewrite Job. The result- an excellent first approach, for the small fry who might be put off enjoyment for years by reading to too soon. The pictures by MarJorie Torrey are also successful. While holding to the original -- and traditional -- appearance of most of the main figures, she has contributed a winning interpretation of her own.
