KIRKUS REVIEW

A biography that traces the three careers of Richard Brinzley Sheridan, who although most famed as a dramatist, was also the manager of the Drury Lane Theater and a political figure for 32 years. This, in spotlighting the man against his times, gives a well rounded picture of the 19th century personages, history- and particularly theater. With no slighting of the inherent weaknesses and excesses of its subject, this shows Sheridan with still an unexplained mystery in his personal as well as financial dealings, traces his three professions as they contrast, merge, and conflict, and gives a feeling of wide knowledge of his character as well as of the part he played in his time. For drama students in the first place but also for those to whom English biography, in its serious aspects, is of special interest.
