The third volume of Chris' development (begun with Sunset Song, continued with Cloud Howe) -- and the best of the three. Robert dead, she follows Ewan to town and through her experiences, we get a picture of a Scottish city of today, with its strikes, its slums, its sordid undertones. Characters that live and breathe and suffer, on their own terms; and a gorgeous, vulgar, real old woman in Chris' partner in the boarding house. The books are worth a wider market than they have so far achieved. Each is a self-contained unit, and stands on its own feet. But the sale of one should make a plus sale of the others.
