THE RISE OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION by Lewis Joseph Sherrill

THE RISE OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

By

Pub Date: April 4th, 1944
Publisher: Macmillan

The author, professor of religious education in Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, has given us a comprehensive and scholarly history of Christian education beginning with Hebrew education in Old Testament times and extending to the 15th century of the Christian era. As the author's thesis is that Christian education flows out of the life of the church, his study necessarily involves a history of the church, its ecclesiastical development, the progress of its thought and the evolution of its practices. Even such an historical study is full of implications for the philosophy of Christian education at the present, particularly as one of our most pressing modern problems is that of the relationship of religion and education. Educators, secular and religious; ministers, theological students and historians will find this book basic for an understanding of the backgrounds of Christian education.
