A companion volume to Miracle Fabrics, this is the history of man's discovery of the basic metals and his invention of the burgeoning varieties found in modern civilization. Man began with three metals- gold, silver and copper. Later he learned about ores and the amazing results of smelting. The Egyptians went on to combine ores, and out of tin and copper, came bronze. The appearance of iron was a milestone in the discovery of new metals and the invention of steel, one of man's greatest industrial achievements. From these well known metals, the authors describe less familiar products used today, alloys- like circonium, indium, cerium, and other metals for the space age. There is much here for the science student or those interested in the general area of economic geography.
