THE SOUTH IN ARCHITECTURE

An authority in the field, Lewis Mumford using his subject as an opportunity to show how architecture can be surveyed not as technical and esthetic alone, but as a manifestation of the language of the spirit and an aspect of self awareness and critical understanding of the things we are living for. These are the Dancy Lectures, given in Alabama College, 1941, on the contribution of the South to American culture, with focus on Thomas Jefferson, his strengths and weaknesses, his mastery of representation of the spirit of his time in his humanistic and classical interpretations; and on Henry Hobson Richardson, whose utilitarian romanticism personified the changes of his period.
