There is a vast amount of miscellaneous information, color and interpretation reflected and implicit in this chatty, anecdotal record of two correspondents in the Far East, on the verge of war. Japan, in greater detail than the other countries, as background for Japan's shadow over China, the Philippines, French Indo China, Singapore, Dutch East Indies, Australia, New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands. There is almost too much rush of story and personalities and places and events -- it makes the whole emerge as a kaleidoscopic picture, rather than clean-cut appraisal. But it is recurrently prophetic of what has happened since it was written, and most of the time exceedingly good reading.
