PILOT OF THE RIVER

Story of a cub pilot on a Mississippi steamboat, before and during the Civil War. The historical background seems authentic enough, Bill's adventures are varied and exciting. But he is thrown from one narrow escape to another, until one loses a sense of reality, and even of suspense. The background deserves a better book; the actual book is mediocre.
