An aspiring bull rider and a restaurant empire heiress reconnect years after a single magical night.
At Shawn Williams’ father’s last RodeoHouston, an event that’s the pinnacle of the rodeo world, Shawn knows it’s his turn to carry the family bull-riding legacy forward. He meets Josie Riley, a girl whose determination and spirit draw him in. Sparks fly during their evening together, but Josie’s parents whisk her away before the two can exchange contact information. Josie carries a torch for Shawn, following his meteoric success. The teens, who are Black, are reunited after three years at an event for Shawn’s sponsors hosted by Josie’s parents. Their attraction immediately reignites, but they both have reasons to guard their hearts. Their shared passion for horses deepens their bond; Josie cherishes her time at her grandparents’ ranch with her horse, Strawberry, while Shawn dreams of teaching children to ride. Josie is devastated when her parents convince her grandparents to sell their ranch. Complicating matters, Shawn has family ties to the deal, straining their relationship. Set against the backdrop of rodeo life, the ever-present dangers of bull riding, and the rich history of Black cowboys, this romance balances sweet, cozy, and taut elements. Late in the story a jarring act of violence shifts the tone, raising the stakes, but the narrative ultimately returns to themes of victory—both in and out of the bull pen.
An uplifting romance grounded in a fascinating and well-realized setting.
