The ubiquitous and alluring Monarch butterfly has had a lot of coverage in juvenile books during the last two seasons, but this one is for the youngest fanciers. Sally's story is really early childhood non-fiction and from the moment she finds her caterpillar to the moment a Monarch emerges from the cocoon, the book is a set of simplified directions for carrying on a humane and fascinating experiment. It tells how to feed, house and observe a specimen, ending with why a butterfly is best set free. The illustrations are precise, very open line drawings, each in full color. The ones dealing with the Monarch-in-progress are notable for clarity and detail.
