The wife of Edgar Mowrer has written a book which might well be used as today's follow-through on Millis' Why Europe Fights. I suggest this for these reasons:- she has told the story of continual aggression on the part of the Axis Powers; she has taken cross-sections country by country, paralleling the step by step progress to total war, and she has done it in such a way that the whole panorama of a world at war is laid before us. Where Millis deals with causality, she deals with actuality. Like Millis she has a faculty for crisp, dramatic statement, a presentation that could be read equality intelligently by High School students and mature adults. Occasionally one gets a sense of topical immediacy in her style; she has an adroit turn of phrase, -- ""If Adolf Hitler had not existed, Germany would probably have invented him""; ""Japan waged violent peace with China""; ""We looked the other way while the savages in our civilization plotted and built""; ""This is the revolution against contemporary civilization itself and the attempt to replace it by something fundamentally evil"", etc.
