He's followed immediately by Rousseau and William Cullen Bryant in a brief first section called ``Men's Writing on Romantic Friendship.'' Later, Freud makes an appearance under ``Men's Writing on a Man Trapped in a Woman's Body.'' These short but thoughtful extracts provide cultural context for a generous collection that seeks to identify a lesbian literary sensibility. The selections—from 16th-century poet Katherine Fowler Philips to modern writers like Jeannette Winterson, Rita Mae Brown, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lord, and others—are arranged in themed sections, e.g., ``Carnivorous Flowers: The Literature of Exotic and Evil Lesbians'' and ``In the Closet: The Literature of Lesbian Encoding.''
