Any number of children's books, especially those continuing favorites handed town from generation to generation, involve major and minor characters engaged in occupations no longer encountered by the children of today. The Scissors Grinder, the ceman and the Lamplighter have all disappeared, but they were essential features of the urban street scene in most neighborhoods. This short book tells in words and pictures about the people that made life safe and, in the case of the children, happy on Long Ago Street. There are the Firehorses, the Sprinkling Wagon, the Organ Grinder and many others shown here. They will be found again and again as characters in juvenile titles and any reader fortunate enough to have seen and read this book will have a clearer picture of their almost forgotten functions.
