The summarizing autobiography, covering some of the earlier material, but giving no impression of repetition. Etches in briefly a somewhat luxurious boyhood, schooling, training as engineer. He felt early the pull of the wilds, but found that engineering did not answer the urge, and turned to Arctic exploration. Joined forces with Amundsen in the successive attempts, finally successful, to fly across the Antarctic regions. His marriage is a thread of happiness woven in and out. His relations with Byrd, and other explorers -- his own experiences -- polar nerves -- nice bits about the strange life. One senses something of a defense of himself as explorer, a wish to prove it a vital urge. Not inspired but readable. Plus sale for boys.
