His other would-be heirs think it's outrageous, but Miranda finds her great-grandfather's bequest of the family mansion to his beloved pet, Carey, perfectly reasonable. While her older (and richer) relatives rant and continue their self-centered ways, she behaves as Grandfather knew she would: cares for and befriends Carey, who rewards her by presenting her with the key that designates her as heir. There's nothing surprising here, but the rather British social satire is amusing; the outcome is satisfying; and the attractive, approachable format--well sprinkled with lively drawings that extend the humor--will help to recommend the book to young readers.
