EYE SPY

A Mysterious Alphabet

by Linda Bourke & illustrated by Linda Bourke

Pub Date: Oct. 1st, 1991
ISBN: 0-87701-805-7
Publisher: Chronicle Books

A cleverly designed book with a single letter plus four square illustrations across each double spread. The first three pictures represent a single meaning and word (a board game, darts, and croquet are all games); the fourth represents a homonym or a homophone (deer, fish, and hare are also ``game'') while also including a clue to the word used in the next letter (hare/hair). It's a bit intricate, and not always perfectly realized (iron in food is represented by a jar labeled ``vitamins plus iron''), but the puzzles should intrigue children at the right stage. Colorful art, handsome if rather static. Key included. (Picture book. 7-9
