Alfonse is a big goose compared to Little Bird, and when they play hide-and-seek together, it takes Alfonse a while to find a place large enough for cover. When he finally does, however, it is so good that Little Bird never finds him, and soon Alfonse begins to worry about Little Bird. ``Help, Help!'' he calls to the other geese, ``I've lost Little Bird!'' The geese spread out in search, while Little Bird tries vainly to get their attention with her small voice and body. Tired, she falls asleep, and Alfonse ultimately finds her. In Wikler's clever first book, which uses inventive typographical arrangements to direct the action, a familiar game is turned upside-down in a way that will delight most toddlers. Spirited watercolors, in a realistic style, show all the fun. (Picture book. 2-7)
