Even before I read that these were the last of the unpublished sketches of Cecil Aldin I felt that these were not quite up to the master's high quality. Some are grand, the frontispiece is typical, the show collies are delightful, so are the cockers, bloodhound, Labrador and several others. The Bullterrier and the Cairn are just unbelievably bad. Aldin, of course, never specialized in pure-breds but these don't even resemble ""just dogs"". The Chalmers' stories are quite up to his form, however, and the Aldin collectors will eagerly, if sadly, add this to their collections.
