An old moral tale, done up as a sprightly performance. Not once but twice vain Gillie the Cock, who fancies himself a fine singer, is flattered by the devious fox into dropping his guard. But Gillie is saved the first time by his harder-working friends a cat and a goat, and the second time seven neighboring hens harass the fox and send him over a cliff to his death. As if to make clear that it's all a romp, Weil's fox wears a hand-puppet fox head, Carlo the cat could be sporting a Halloween cat costume, the cock struts in tights and high heels, and the hens celebrate at the end with a high-kicking cancan. And they all dash through their paces with flourish.
