As told in Matthew, and beginning with the three-times-fourteen generations from Abraham to the birth of the Child, the story of how the Wise Men follow the star at Herod's command, how an angel warns Joseph in a dream to take the Child and his mother to Egypt, how Herod orders the killing of the children of Bethlehem, and how the Child later returns to grow up in Nazareth. Well's simple, stately, totally natural narration reminds us of the powerful elements this story is made of. And though her characteristically quick cartoons may seem unduly light, they have strong expressive qualities of their own. One picture, of the grieving parents of Bethlehem, seems more a ballet--or a burlesque--than a direct representation of emotion. But overall, her unintimidated, accomplished artlessness interlocks easily and effectively with the text.
