Mozart's life may lend itself better than any other to a focus on early childhood; his was both well documented and extraordinarily significant. Weil reports his early accomplishments, plus incidents of interest to the young, in some detail, while also using her wonderfully agile line to create spirited illustrations leavened with humor. Mozart's later achievements are summed up at the end. Though the scope here is more limited and the art less pretentious, this livelier, in- depth portrait is superior to Downing's (see above); still, both have merit. Glossary.
