READ REVIEW

HELLO ALASKA

Tightly written, timely, and of particular value as supplementary reading in schools, this is straight factual material, unglamorized dealing with Alaska. The author traces its development from early 18th century to the present, through the Russian occupation, life in those days, the purchase by the United States and the selection of the name, Alaska, Indian word for ""Great Land"". The topography, the natives, the government, hidden treasure, trade, local color, and the present day developments and dangers. A useful book, though one could wish for more vigorous presentation.
