MY LIFE WITH A BRAHMIN FAMILY

By

Publisher: Roy

In quest of enlightenment, Lizelle Reymond, a French writer, worldly, the product of the best European culture can offer a woman, isolates herself within a strict Kumaon Himalayan household. At first it is a trying ordeal. The self-possessed, adaptable woman, finds, for the first time in her life, that she cannot in any real way communicate with her hosts despite her studies of Indian matters. She is under constant scrutiny, politely mocked for her attention to grooming--she hesitates to visit the reverend Maharaja in a Sari in which she has slept--and is treated with a totally formal politeness. But when she meets the naked Maharaja, an ascetic, and subsequently begins to undergo various Brahmin disciplines, she is initiated into a warm Indian home. This story of her rewarding acceptance by her adopted family is unique in the educated insights it provides, and should be of particular interest to students of the East, and to those who enjoy their travelogues peppered with intense personal incident.
