On two counts, this book should have a wide appeal:-first, because it is thoroughly entertaining reading and a vigorous picture of the old school of diplomacy; second, because Griscom immortalizes countries, people and ways of life that we may never see again. A frank story of a career diplomat, who traces his experiences from his secretaryship under Ambassador Bayard in London, to his more impressive appointments to Turkey and Persia, Japan, Brazil and Italy. Finally, his special assignment, during the first world war, as Pershing's ""personal ambassador"" to London. His is a story of kings, diplomats, business leaders -- a life very different from the pressure diplomacy of recent years. Gossip -- in its finest sense -- and good reading.
