Mr. Mallan, according to the former Commander-in-Chief of the North American Air Defense Command who wrote the brief Foreword to his book, is ""nobody's atsy"". This is a statement to keep in mind throughout the some 78 interviews with leading military and civilian authorities on our national defense which follow. Mallan's purpose is to blast ""the commonly misinformed story"" of a ""military-industrial complex"" which might plunge us into war. We're in good hands, he conends, and there is no reason to fear an accidental holocaust. He has assembled many valuable facts and some interesting opinions on this sensitive subject. However, one can never quite dismiss the nagging notion that Mallan himself may have ended by doing what this book has been intended to prevent--to deter the reader from taking ""sides emotionally and thereby perhaps indirectly give aid or comfort to the enemy"". But then, it is always easy to suspect the motives of those who would have us ""sleep without fear"".
