SEVEN PLAYS OF MAXIM GORKY

By

Publisher: Yale

An addition to the growing literature of the Russians in modern translation -- this offers the American public a chance to familiarize themselves with other plays by the great Russian playwright, forerunner of the Revolution, than The Lower Depths, the play usually associated with his name. The editors and translators supply an introductory chapter on Gorky's life, with special emphasis on the significance of his work and the comments made by his contemporaries, Chekhov, particularly. The plays included in the anthology are:- The Lower Depths, Barbarians, Queer People, The ykovs, Vessa Zkele, The Enemies, Yegor Bulychov and the Others. Gorky's chief importance today, perhaps, lies in his attitude toward vested rights, aristocracy -- and the workers. His characterizations stand the test of time and reading. In spite of the fact that in some of his late work he satirized the Soviet, he is accepted today as a classic dramatist whose work is regularly produced by the Soviet theatre.
