The highly erratic Joan Fleming is not at her best among the upper crust, and when hearty newlywed York Cragg is savagely stabbed to death, his bereaved father, Sir Jason, and less bereaved widow, winsome Easter, engage in arch dialogues of mutual consolation along with some amateur sleuthing. They've found a photo of York's alluring Other Woman, and Sir J., determined to track her down, soon follows as a victim of the mad stabber. Enter Nathaniel Sapperton, ex-spy and family friend, who picks up the trail--leading to some charming vignettes with a touring music-hall troupe (Big Chief, the Human Candelabra) and to the foreseeable Least-Likely-Person denouement. Fleming is always more readable than most, but her central characters are usually riper than these glib folk caught in implausible machinations.
